Up to 1,000 sites can be added to one Google Webmaster Tools account. You need to verify every site for it to be added to Google Webmaster Tools. This is because Google needs to know if you actually own the site you're going to add. If you do not own the website, or cannot verify ownership for some reason, Google Webmaster Tools cannot be of any use to you. The reason behind this policy is that the Webmaster Tools influence your visibility and SEO in Google. So, it is not logical if someone other than the owner of a website determines the website's ranking in Google.
For verification, Google offers various methods. We'll discuss the methods in detail in later posts. For the time being, it should be enough for you to know that all these methods involve making certain changes in the website that prove to Google that you own the website because you can make those specific changes.
How to add and verify a site in Google Webmaster Tools:
- Sign into Google Webmaster Tools with your Google Account.
- Click the Add a site button, and type the URL of the site you want to add. Make sure you type the entire URL, such as http://www.example.com/
- Click Continue. The Site verification page opens.
- (Optional) In the Name box, type a name for your site (for example, My Blog).
- Select the verification method you want, and follow the instructions.
